I’d suggest purchasing a locking carabiner along with the ATC (see link below) as your BF will need the carabiner as well. How long has your BF been climbing? If he is newer and only top roping, I would lean towards getting him the ATC.Īs far as brands, the one you have pictured is made by Black Diamond, which is a very reputable climbing brand.

I use the Grigri for belaying and the ATC for rappelling. Benefit of the ATC is it doubles as a rappel device and it’s much easier to use. A Grigri is a belay device that comes with an assisted break feature, meaning if your BF accidentally lets go of the rope while belaying the device will catch (stopping the rope and preventing the climber from falling). It sounds like your sister is recommending a Grigri. I have always been super impressed with how kind and willing to help the climbing community is. I will get an ATC or tube device with a guide mode - as that's what he asked for - instead of the grigri. What is a brand or product that you guys are happy with that you could point me to/recommended? He specifically mentioned in passing the need for an ATC, but would it be an issue if I got him the other device? What are the advantages of the two different styles? I have a couple questions before I make a purchase. I'm not sure what this is called or what it looks like. My sister climbs and uses a device where it has a lever and you don't need to hold the rope against the device with tension. slots (?) that you thread the rope through and a loop to attach a carabiner and the threaded rope through to keep the climber in place. When I google it, I just see the simple belay device where the belayer holds on to the rope and use tension to keep the climber in place. I am hoping to get a Christmas present for my boyfriend - he needs an ATC belay device? I don't know much about climbing so I apologize. Regardless of any advice you may receive while using this forum, it is your personal responsibility to make sure that you are fully trained to handle the great deal of risk involved in climbing and related activities. Hold your hand in the brake position and confirm the device is operating properly to lock the rope. Pull on both ends of rope to ensure smooth feeding. Feed rope through the belay device correctly per manufacturer’s guidelines. Please understand that rock climbing is an extremely dangerous activity. Clip a locking carabiner and belay device to the the belayer’s harness belay loop.Poor quality/low quality submissions may be removed at moderator's discretion.
